The Reiki Association

The Reiki Association (TRA), based in the UK, began life in 1991 from the desire of a few Masters in England who were looking to encourage and support a move towards setting standards for professional practice in Reiki around the country. We have travelled quite a journey since then and the subject of professional practice has ebbed and flowed throughout our process of coming together as a Reiki community.
We now have a membership of around a thousand people and employ 3 people – an Administrator, Membership Secretary and a Treasurer. Since becoming a limited company a few years ago, we have a legally constituted Board of Directors and are required to file annual, audited accounts to Companies House in London. Technically we have a Board, but the terminology we use is still "TRA Council” as this seems to better reflect how we work together in our decision-making processes.

In 1996, a group of Masters and the existing Executive put together a Statement of Identity saying very clearly who we are, who we exist to serve, what our purpose is and what we aim to do. This was a huge process and I was privileged to be the facilitator who took people through this as my background is in this area of work. Just getting together to draft our first thoughts took about 5/6 months and then we wrote to every member of TRA and asked for their feedback. The response was very encouraging and told us we were on the right track. Just under half our members replied which was an amazing response and over 80% said that they agreed or strongly agreed with our Statement of Identity. The entire process took around 9-10 months and we consider it a good investment of time and energy as we have an identity and vision to focus on when tackling difficult decisions or looking at our next steps as an Association.

The paradox of our mission statement is at the heart of TRA and is our place of growth – being clear that we exist to facilitate and nurture the understanding and practice of the Usui System of Reiki Healing as expressed by the Office of Grand Master as well as welcoming all Reiki students. The Association is open to all people initiated into Reiki regardless of level of initiation. All we ask is that the person was actually initiated in the presence of their Reiki Master. We don’t accept distant or internet initiations. Although we are based in the UK, we also have some international members who we hope feel part of TRA.

In our early years, we were a group of people just coming together annually to set our agenda, share Reiki, network and generally get to know one another better.
Increasingly, as Reiki became better known, we have become a point of contact for members of the public looking for Reiki treatments or more information about learning Reiki. Following articles in the local or national press, we can often be inundated with requests for this kind of information – sometimes 700 to 800 a year.

When TRA was smaller and we all pretty well knew each other or each other’s Masters, it was quite easy to give out this kind of information. However, as we grew as an organisation, together with the explosion in Reiki systems happening in the UK and all around the world, it became more difficult to give out accurate details of practitioners. This encouraged us to put together a Public Practitioners’ list as well as a Masters Directory both of which are available to TRA members as well as members of the public. TRA members who want to have their details included in either of these publications pay an annual fee (approximately 45 euros for each).
Those looking to be included on the list of public practitioners are asked to
o have Second Degree Reiki
o do regular self treatments
o give a treatment free of charge to an Adviser appointed by TRA who will report back to TRA Council
o have had a Reiki treatment on four consecutive days and also
o have paid for some Reiki treatments themselves.

We feel that if people have a public practice they should themselves be willing to pay for treatments and support the principle of public practice. We ask practitioners who are on this list to carry out the sequence of hand positions which are part of Usui Shiki Ryoho and that when a member of the public is referred to them through TRA, they only do Reiki treatments and not other modalities eg crystals, reflexology, etc.

Entry in the Masters Directory is open to all Masters in the Association. As well as basic contact information, Masters are asked to give details about
o which system they teach and practise
o their lineage
o how long their classes are
o how much they ask as monetary exchange
o their own Reiki journey

Last year my role on Council was to oversee the publication of the directory and I was surprised to see so many application forms from Masters who either didn’t know the name of their initiating Master or knew very little about their lineage. We do challenge where people give us inaccurate information and will not knowingly publish it. We also offer a lineage tracing service (for a small fee) for people who are looking to clarify their lineage details.

The Masters Directory generates income for TRA as Masters pay to have their details entered which covers the costs of typing, printing and layout and we sell them for a small amount throughout the year. Details of public practitioners are available free of charge and we now publish this updated list each quarter in our own TRA magazine – TOUCH.

We have information available to members about setting up a Public Practice which we offer free of charge. These are guidelines intended to support people who are new to the idea of public practice and offer practical advice on insurance, record keeping, confidentiality, etc.

We also offer a Reiki Care Service to members only. This is run entirely by volunteers and is a way of supporting each other when we are dealing with life events where we need some extra help. We have a network of volunteers who send Reiki on a daily basis for a week at a time. People making requests for distant Reiki in this way are asked for a donation, in keeping with the exchange aspect of Reiki and this pays for the telephone costs, etc of all the volunteers. This is also a good way for members to be involved in an aspect of community that may suit them more than standing for Council or editing the magazine.

At the moment, we have just carried out another consultation exercise with our members asking them for feedback about being a member. We are keen to give people what they want and look to our members to keep us on track. We have had a very encouraging response (again) and our members are telling us that they want more local and regional gatherings, more short events, more time together and not just at our Annual Reiki Gatherings. So we will take their comments on board and look at increasing the involvement of more members and having Reiki sharing, seminars, guest speakers and workshops happening more at a grass roots level. It feels like we have spent a lot of time looking inward, setting up policies and procedures and now there is a call for us to be more outward looking – all very healthy.

Meanwhile, our main method of contact is through our Annual Gatherings. We have two each year – one for all students and one for Masters only. We invite guest speakers and this year Paul Mitchell, Head of Discipline for Usui Shiki Ryoho will be leading both Gatherings. Although they are linked to The Reiki Association, they are nor exclusively for members. We extend our welcome to all members of the Reiki community. We currently use a beautiful venue in Wales and have the centre to ourselves. The food is vegetarian, the scenery is stunning and the surroundings are very peaceful. We share Reiki, talk, walk and listen to each other’s experiences. We also have our Annual General Meeting (AGM) then with the option for non-members to spend time in many other interesting ways.

Many conversations are taking place now around the world-wide Reiki community about looking at setting standards in professional practice and this is where TRA came in. We are now looking at the implications of this and the gains and losses of going down this route. Perhaps there is a way to deepen public practice without going down the "professional” route? So another sub group has been formed and off we go again on another journey, feeling older and wiser from our 12 years as an organisation.

If you are interested in having more information about The Reiki Association (or would like to book on either Gathering), please check out our website www.reikiassociation.org.uk.

We ask that members agree to
o abide by the code of ethics

Marilyn Shields:
"I took first degree Reiki over 9 years ago and joined The Reiki Association within a few months. In 1994 I was given responsibility for developing education and training within TRA - mainly for members who were interested in developing a public practice. In 1998 I designed and delivered a mentors' training programme aimed at experienced masters and second degree students in the UK who were willing to offer advice, guidance and support to members looking at their next Reiki steps. I am currently a member of TRA Council and have been an active member of the Association since joining. I was initiated as a Master in November 2000 by Paul Mitchell and currently teach and practise around the West Midlands, UK."
